Ramadan Umrah 2027 - A Guide for UK Families
Why Ramadan Is the Most Popular Time for Umrah
Performing Umrah during the holy month of Ramadan holds special significance for Muslims. The spiritual rewards of worship during Ramadan are considered to be multiplied, and an Umrah performed in Ramadan is held to carry a very great reward. For UK families, it is an opportunity to experience the most spiritually intense atmosphere in Makkah and Madinah.
However, Ramadan is also the busiest period for Umrah. Hotels near the Haram fill up months in advance, flights become harder to secure, and the crowds in and around the Grand Mosque are at their peak. Early planning is essential.
Ramadan 2027 Dates
Ramadan dates vary by year and country, so check the exact dates closer to 2027. The exact dates are confirmed by moon sighting in Saudi Arabia, so they can move by a day or two.
If you are planning Umrah during Ramadan 2027, now is the time to start. The most popular travel dates - particularly the last 10 nights of Ramadan - sell out very quickly.
Visa Requirements
UK passport holders can perform Umrah during Ramadan using the new Saudi Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) or a Saudi e-visa. The ETA is valid for 730 days from issue, allowing multiple entries but only 180 days total stay, and every traveller needs their own application, children included. Rules can change, so check the current requirements before you book. For a full breakdown of the Saudi visa options, see our Saudi Arabia visa guide for UK citizens, and we can help you with the application.
All Umrah pilgrims must have a valid certificate of vaccination against the ACWY strains of meningitis. This must be administered at least 10 days before travel.
Booking Early Matters
Ramadan Umrah demand from the UK is extremely high, particularly during school half-term periods that may overlap. Accommodation within walking distance of the Haram in Makkah and the Prophet's Mosque in Madinah is the first to sell out.
Flights from UK airports - especially direct routes from Manchester and London - also fill up quickly during this period. The earlier you plan, the more choice you have - especially for hotels close to the holy sites.
Get in touch early and we can help you find hotels close to the Haram for your family.
Travelling with Family During Ramadan
Performing Umrah as a family during Ramadan is a deeply rewarding experience, but it requires extra planning - especially with young children or elderly relatives. Our complete Umrah guide for UK families covers documents, vaccinations, packing, and practical tips for travelling with children.
The Haram is extremely crowded during Ramadan, particularly around Taraweeh prayers and during the last 10 nights. If you have young children, consider performing Tawaf during quieter times such as late morning or early afternoon.
Fasting while performing the physical rituals of Umrah can be demanding, especially in warm weather. Stay hydrated during suhoor, pace yourself, and ensure elderly family members have access to wheelchairs if needed. Wheelchair services are available within the Haram.
Book accommodation as close to the Haram as possible. The difference between a 2-minute walk and a 15-minute walk is significant when you are fasting and returning for multiple prayers throughout the day.
What to Expect During Ramadan in Makkah
The atmosphere in Makkah during Ramadan is unlike anything else. The Grand Mosque is full around the clock, with prayers, Quran recitation, and worship continuing through the night. Iftar is served throughout the Haram and surrounding areas, and the sense of community among pilgrims from all over the world is powerful.
Many hotels offer iftar and suhoor meals as part of their room rates.
The last 10 nights of Ramadan are the busiest period. Many pilgrims spend the entire night in the Haram during these nights, seeking Laylat ul-Qadr. If this is important to your family, plan your travel dates accordingly. Be aware that the roads around the Haram become extremely congested during these nights and walking is often faster than any vehicle. Hotels within a short walking distance make a significant difference to your experience during this period.
