December Umrah 2026 from the UK: Your Family Guide

For many British Pakistani and Muslim families in the UK, the Christmas school holidays in December 2026 offer a precious opportunity to perform Umrah together. It's a time when children are off school, making it ideal for a family pilgrimage. However, this popularity also means December is a busy period in Makkah and Madinah, requiring careful planning and early booking to ensure a smooth and spiritually fulfilling journey.

Why December is a Popular Time for Umrah

December stands out as a preferred month for Umrah for several key reasons, especially for families travelling from the UK:

Going for Umrah? We can apply for everyone's Saudi ETA and book hotels close to the Haram. Send us your dates and who is travelling.
  • School Holidays: The Christmas break aligns perfectly with the academic calendar, allowing families to travel without disrupting children's schooling. This makes it a prime window for a shared spiritual experience.
  • Mild Weather: Unlike the scorching summer months, December in Makkah and Madinah offers much milder and more comfortable temperatures. This is particularly beneficial for families with young children or elderly relatives, making the physical aspects of Umrah, such as Tawaf and Sa'i, more manageable.

Understanding Saudi Visas for Umrah

To visit Saudi Arabia for Umrah, you must obtain a visa. The type of visa you choose depends on your travel plans and how long you intend to stay. It's important to remember that Umrah is performed, and the visas discussed here are suitable for that purpose. Bhatti Travel can help with Saudi visa applications.

Passport Requirements

Before applying for any visa, ensure your British citizen passport is valid. For entry into Saudi Arabia, your passport must have an expiry date at least 6 months after the date you arrive. If your passport does not meet this requirement, you will need to renew it. You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document.

Be aware that if your passport shows that you have travelled to, or were born in, Israel, you may not be allowed to enter Saudi Arabia.

Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)

An ETA is a convenient option if you are travelling for Umrah. It is valid for 730 days from the date of issue and allows for multiple entries, with a total stay of up to 180 days across that 730-day period. You must apply for an ETA online before you travel. An ETA does not include health insurance for your visit.

E-visa

Another option is the e-visa, which is available for tourists. An e-visa is valid for 365 days from the date of issue and allows for multiple entries, with a total stay of up to 90 days across that 365-day period. You can apply for an e-visa online or when you arrive at any of Saudi Arabia’s international airports. An e-visa includes basic health insurance for your visit.

For a more detailed breakdown of all visa options, you can refer to our Saudi Arabia Visa for UK Citizens - Complete Guide. For the ETA, see our Saudi Arabia ETA for UK Citizens guide.

Essential Documents and Vaccinations

Beyond your visa, there are other important preparations for your December Umrah:

  • Vaccination Certificate: All Umrah pilgrims must have a certificate proving they have received a meningococcal quadrivalent vaccine. This is a mandatory requirement for entry.
  • Yellow Fever Vaccine: If you are travelling from a country listed as a yellow fever transmission risk, you must also have a yellow fever vaccine certificate.
  • Travel Insurance: While the e-visa includes some health insurance, medical treatment in Saudi Arabia can be expensive. It is wise to consider taking out additional travel insurance to cover costs beyond the included amount, especially for families.

Weather in Makkah and Madinah in December

December offers some of the most pleasant weather for performing Umrah. Days in Makkah are warm and comfortable, nights are cooler, and Madinah is noticeably cooler than Makkah after dark - so pack a light jacket. Without the extreme heat of the summer months, it is a much easier time to spend long hours at the Haram, and far more comfortable for children and elderly family members.

Booking Your Umrah: Why Early is Best

Given the popularity of December for Umrah, especially with families utilising the Christmas school holidays, booking your travel arrangements well in advance is highly recommended. Here’s why:

  • High Demand: Flights and hotels, particularly those close to the Haram, get booked up quickly. Early booking increases your chances of securing your preferred dates and accommodation.
  • Better Availability: Booking early means more choices for hotels that suit your family's needs, such as larger rooms or specific amenities.
  • Smoother Planning: With your travel arrangements confirmed, you can focus on the spiritual preparation for your journey without last-minute stress.

Choosing Your Accommodation: Proximity to the Haram

For families, especially those with young children or elderly members, staying in a hotel close to the Haram in Makkah and Madinah can significantly enhance your Umrah experience. The convenience of being able to walk to the mosques for prayers, return easily for rest, or attend to children's needs without long commutes is invaluable. Hotels within walking distance often have higher demand during peak seasons like December, reinforcing the need for early booking.

What to Pack for a Winter Umrah

Even though December is milder, smart packing is key for comfort. Consider these essentials for your family:

  • Ihram Garments: For men, two unstitched white cloths.
  • Modest Clothing: Loose-fitting, modest attire for women, covering the body appropriately. While an abaya or hair covering is not strictly required for non-Saudi women, many choose to wear them out of respect.
  • Comfortable Footwear: Slip-on shoes or sandals are ideal, as you'll be removing them frequently before entering mosques.
  • Sun Protection: Despite the milder temperatures, the sun can still be strong. Pack sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat or umbrella.
  • Personal Medications: Bring any prescription medications you need, along with a copy of your prescription.
  • Portable Charger: Essential for keeping your phone charged for navigation, communication, and capturing memories.
  • Small Backpack: Useful for carrying water, snacks, and personal items during your time at the Haram.

Staying Connected Abroad

Staying in touch with family back home and having access to maps or information while in Saudi Arabia is important. We recommend using an eSIM for mobile data abroad. It's a convenient way to get internet access without needing a physical SIM card. You can Get a Maya eSIM for your trip.

Planning Your Family's Spiritual Journey

Performing Umrah as a family is a profound experience. While the logistics are important, remember to focus on the spiritual aspect of your journey. Encourage children to participate in prayers and learn about the significance of each ritual. Take time for reflection and make the most of your time in the holy cities.
