Umrah Guide for UK Families - Everything You Need to Know
Planning Umrah from the UK
Performing Umrah is one of the most meaningful journeys a Muslim family can undertake. For UK-based families, the process of planning and preparing can feel overwhelming - especially if it is your first time. This guide breaks down everything you need to know, from visas and vaccinations to what to pack and how to travel with children.
At Bhatti Travel, we have been helping families from across the UK perform Umrah for over 40 years. We handle every aspect of the journey so you can focus entirely on the spiritual experience.
Visa Options for Umrah
UK passport holders have two main visa options for performing Umrah.
The Saudi tourist eVisa is the most popular choice. It is valid for one year with multiple entries, allows stays of up to 90 days, and can be used for Umrah outside of Hajj season. The application is entirely online and most approvals come through within 24 to 48 hours. For a full breakdown of visa types, documents, and processing times, see our Saudi Arabia visa guide for UK citizens.
The traditional Umrah visa is arranged through an authorised travel agent and is a single-entry visa typically valid for 30 days. This option is often part of a complete Umrah package that includes flights, accommodation, and ground transport.
If you hold a BRP (Biometric Residence Permit) rather than a British passport, you may still be eligible for a Saudi eVisa depending on your nationality and residency status. Contact us and we will advise you on the best route.
Documents You Will Need
For a smooth Umrah trip from the UK, make sure you have the following documents prepared well in advance:
A valid UK passport with at least 6 months validity from your date of entry into Saudi Arabia. A recent passport-sized photograph meeting Saudi visa standards. A meningococcal ACWY vaccination certificate - this is mandatory for all Umrah pilgrims. Confirmed flight bookings and accommodation details in Makkah and Madinah. Travel insurance that covers medical treatment in Saudi Arabia. For children travelling, ensure their passports are valid and they are listed correctly on all bookings.
When you book through Bhatti Travel, we ensure all your documents are in order before departure so there are no last-minute surprises.
Vaccinations for Umrah
Saudi Arabia requires all Umrah pilgrims to have a valid meningococcal ACWY vaccination. This must be administered at least 10 days before your departure date. You can get this vaccination from your GP or a travel health clinic.
It is also recommended to ensure your routine vaccinations are up to date, including tetanus and hepatitis A. If you are travelling from or through a yellow fever risk country, a yellow fever vaccination certificate is also required.
Book your vaccination appointment at least 4 to 6 weeks before your travel date to ensure everything is sorted in time.
Travelling with Children
Many UK families perform Umrah with young children, and with the right preparation it can be a wonderful experience for the whole family. Here are some practical tips:
Children under 18 must travel with a parent or legal guardian. Ensure each child has their own valid passport. Pack comfortable, loose-fitting clothing suitable for the warm climate. Bring a lightweight pushchair if you have young children - the distances between prayer areas and accommodation can be significant. Keep children hydrated, especially during Tawaf and Sa'i. Plan for rest breaks - young children tire quickly in the heat and crowds. Consider booking accommodation as close to the Haram as possible to reduce walking distances.
Bhatti Travel specialises in family Umrah packages and can arrange accommodation, transport, and flights that work around your family's needs.
Best Time to Perform Umrah
Umrah can be performed at any time of the year except during the Hajj period. However, some times are more popular than others.
Ramadan is the most sought-after time for Umrah, as the spiritual rewards are considered to be multiplied. However, this also means larger crowds, higher demand for flights and hotels, and the need to book well in advance. UK school half-term holidays in February and October are also popular travel periods for families. For detailed guidance on planning around the holy month, see our Ramadan Umrah 2026 guide.
The winter months from November to February offer milder temperatures, making the physical aspects of Umrah more comfortable - particularly for elderly family members and young children. The summer months from June to August can see temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius, which can be challenging.
Whichever time you choose, we recommend booking as early as possible to secure the best accommodation close to the Haram.
What to Pack for Umrah
Packing smartly can make a big difference to your comfort during Umrah. Essentials include:
Ihram garments for men - two unstitched white cloths. Comfortable, slip-on footwear that is easy to remove before entering the mosque. Loose, modest clothing for women covering the full body. A small prayer mat for use outside the main prayer halls. Sunscreen and a hat or umbrella for sun protection. Any prescription medications you need, with a copy of your prescription. A money belt or secure pouch for valuables. A portable phone charger - you will be on your feet for long periods. Snacks and a refillable water bottle.
