Lahore Travel Guide for UK Visitors
Why Visit Lahore?
Lahore is Pakistan's cultural capital and one of the most vibrant cities in South Asia. For UK visitors - whether you are visiting family, exploring your heritage, or simply looking for an unforgettable city break - Lahore offers a unique blend of Mughal history, incredible food, and warm hospitality that is hard to find anywhere else.
With direct and connecting flights available from Manchester, London, and Birmingham, Lahore is more accessible from the UK than many people realise.
Top Things to See and Do
Badshahi Mosque
One of the largest mosques in the world, the Badshahi Mosque was built in 1673 during the Mughal era. Its vast courtyard can hold over 50,000 worshippers and the red sandstone architecture is breathtaking. It sits in the heart of the Walled City and is a must-visit for any first-time visitor to Lahore.
Lahore Fort (Shahi Qila)
Right next to the Badshahi Mosque, Lahore Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site spanning over 20 hectares. Inside you will find the Sheesh Mahal (Palace of Mirrors), the Naulakha Pavilion, and beautifully maintained Mughal gardens. Allow at least 2 to 3 hours to explore properly.
The Walled City (Androon Lahore)
The old walled city is where Lahore's character truly comes alive. Narrow streets packed with bazaars, food stalls, traditional havelis, and the sounds and smells of centuries of history. Delhi Gate, Lohari Gate, and the surrounding markets are fascinating to walk through.
Shalimar Gardens
Another UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Shalimar Gardens were built by Emperor Shah Jahan in 1641. The terraced gardens with their fountains, marble pavilions, and mango orchards are a peaceful escape from the city's bustle.
Food Street (Gawalmandi)
Lahore is famous for its food, and Gawalmandi Food Street is where locals and visitors come together over some of the best traditional cuisine in Pakistan. Expect sizzling kebabs, nihari, paya, haleem, and freshly baked naan. The atmosphere in the evening is electric.
Beyond Gawalmandi, Lahore has countless food spots worth exploring. Lakshmi Chowk is legendary for its late-night tikka stalls. Anarkali Bazaar has been serving traditional dishes for over a century. For something more relaxed, the restaurants along M.M. Alam Road in Gulberg offer a mix of Pakistani and international cuisine in a modern setting. If there is one thing you should not miss in Lahore, it is the food.
Wagah Border Ceremony
The daily flag-lowering ceremony at the Wagah Border between Pakistan and India is a unique experience. The elaborate military ceremony takes place every evening before sunset and draws huge crowds on both sides. It is about 30 minutes from the city centre and well worth the trip. Arrive at least an hour before the ceremony starts to get a good spot in the viewing stands.
Minar-e-Pakistan
Located in Iqbal Park, the Minar-e-Pakistan is a national monument marking the site where the Pakistan Resolution was passed in 1940. The tower stands 62 metres tall and is surrounded by well-maintained gardens. It is a short walk from the Badshahi Mosque and Lahore Fort, making it easy to combine all three into a single morning or afternoon.
Day Trips from Lahore
Lahore makes a great base for exploring the wider Punjab region. Nankana Sahib, the birthplace of Guru Nanak and one of the holiest sites in Sikhism, is about 80 kilometres west of Lahore and makes for a fascinating day trip. Harappa, one of the major archaeological sites of the ancient Indus Valley Civilisation, is around 200 kilometres southwest and can be visited in a long day trip or combined with an overnight stay.
For something closer, the Changa Manga forest reserve is about an hour's drive from the city and offers a peaceful escape with boating and walking trails.
Best Time to Visit Lahore
The best months to visit Lahore from the UK are October to March. During this period, temperatures are comfortable - ranging from 10 to 25 degrees Celsius - and the skies are generally clear. For a full seasonal breakdown across the whole country, see our guide to the best time to visit Pakistan.
Avoid visiting between May and August if possible. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 40 degrees Celsius, and the monsoon season from July to September brings heavy rain and humidity.
The weeks around Eid and the Lahore Literature Festival (typically held in February) are particularly lively times to visit.
Getting Around Lahore
Lahore has expanded significantly in recent years. The Orange Line Metro, which opened in 2020, connects key areas of the city and is a convenient option for getting around. Ride-hailing apps are widely used and are the most comfortable way to travel between attractions.
For the Walled City, walking is the best option - the narrow streets are not designed for vehicles, and exploring on foot is the only way to properly take in the atmosphere.
Practical Tips for UK Visitors
You will need a valid Pakistan visa before travelling. Bhatti Travel handles the entire visa process for you - just bring us your documents and we will take care of the rest. For full details on documents and processing times, see our Pakistan visa guide for UK citizens.
The local currency is the Pakistani Rupee. ATMs are widely available in Lahore, and most accept UK bank cards. However, carrying some cash is advisable for bazaars and smaller shops.
Dress modestly, particularly when visiting mosques and religious sites. Lahore is a conservative city and visitors should respect local customs.
Tap water is not safe to drink. Stick to bottled water, which is cheap and available everywhere.
Pick up a local SIM card on arrival at the airport - Jazz and Zong both offer affordable data plans that will keep you connected throughout your stay. Ride-hailing apps like Careem and inDrive require a local number to work, so a SIM card is well worth it. Lahore has a high risk of crime and violence, so take normal precautions with your belongings in crowded areas like the Walled City bazaars and bus stations.
