When Should You Visit Pakistan?

Pakistan is a country of incredible geographic diversity - from the soaring peaks of the Karakoram and Himalayas in the north to the beaches of the Arabian Sea in the south. The best time to visit depends entirely on what you want to do and where you want to go.

For most UK travellers visiting family, exploring the cultural heartlands of Lahore and Islamabad, or heading to the northern areas, the ideal travel windows are spring and autumn. But every season has something to offer. You will need a visa before you travel - our Pakistan visa guide for UK citizens covers the full application process.

Spring - March to May

Spring is one of the best times to visit Pakistan. Temperatures are warm but manageable across most of the country. In Lahore and Islamabad, expect daytime temperatures between 25 and 35 degrees Celsius with clear skies.

This is also when the northern areas begin to open up after winter. The Karakoram Highway becomes accessible, and the valleys of Hunza, Swat, and Naran start to come alive with blossom. It is a stunning time to visit if you are planning a trip to the north. March and April are particularly beautiful in the Hunza Valley, where cherry and apricot blossoms cover the hillsides against the backdrop of snow-capped peaks.

The Shandur Polo Festival, held in the high mountain pass between Chitral and Gilgit, typically takes place in late spring and is one of the most unique sporting events in the world.

Summer - June to August

Summer in the lowlands of Punjab and Sindh is extremely hot, with temperatures regularly exceeding 40 degrees Celsius. Lahore, Karachi, and Multan can be uncomfortable during this period, and the monsoon season brings heavy rainfall from July onwards.

However, summer is peak season for the northern areas. The valleys of Hunza, Skardu, Naltar, and Fairy Meadows are at their most accessible and beautiful. Temperatures in the north stay between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius, making it perfect for trekking, sightseeing, and escaping the lowland heat.

If your trip is focused on the northern mountains, summer is the time to go. If you are visiting family in Lahore or Islamabad, you may want to avoid the hottest months.

Autumn - September to November

Autumn is another excellent travel window. The monsoon rains ease off by September, temperatures drop to comfortable levels across the country, and the northern areas put on a spectacular display of golden autumn colours.

October and November are particularly good for visiting Lahore and Islamabad. The weather is pleasant, the air is clearer, and it is an ideal time for sightseeing. If Lahore is on your itinerary, our Lahore travel guide covers the best things to see, where to eat, and how to get around. The Hunza Valley in late October is famous for its golden apricot and poplar trees - a photographer's dream.

Winter - December to February

Winter in Pakistan varies hugely by region. In the north, heavy snowfall closes many mountain passes and roads. The Karakoram Highway may be blocked, and areas like Skardu and Hunza become difficult to access. However, Malam Jabba and Naltar have developed as ski destinations in recent years, attracting visitors who want to experience Pakistan's mountains in a completely different way.

However, winter is a pleasant time to visit the southern and central parts of the country. Lahore and Islamabad have cool, crisp days with temperatures between 5 and 18 degrees Celsius. Karachi stays mild and sunny throughout winter.

If you are visiting family in Punjab or Sindh during the UK school Christmas holidays, winter is a perfectly comfortable time to travel. Be aware that fog can cause flight delays at Lahore and Islamabad airports during December and January, so building in a buffer day at either end of your trip is sensible.

Ramadan and Eid

Many UK families time their visits to Pakistan around Ramadan and Eid. The dates change each year as they follow the Islamic lunar calendar. During Ramadan, restaurants and food stalls are closed during daylight hours, but the evenings come alive with iftar gatherings and night markets.

Eid ul-Fitr at the end of Ramadan and Eid ul-Adha later in the year are major family occasions and a wonderful time to be in Pakistan. Flights and accommodation book up quickly during these periods, so plan well ahead.

FCDO Travel Advice

The UK Foreign Office advises against travel to certain parts of Pakistan, particularly areas near the Afghan border and parts of Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Always check the latest FCDO travel advice before booking your trip.

Most UK travellers visiting family in Punjab, Islamabad, and the major cities are not affected by these restrictions. Bhatti Travel stays up to date with all FCDO advisories and will always ensure your travel plans are safe and sensible.

Flights from the UK

Several major airlines fly from the UK to Pakistan, including PIA, Emirates, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, Etihad, and Saudi Airlines. Direct flights are available from Manchester and London to Lahore and Islamabad, with connecting options from Birmingham and other UK airports.

Flight availability and demand vary by season. Summer and the weeks around Eid are the busiest periods, and flights can sell out well in advance. If you are planning to travel during school holidays or around a major occasion, booking early gives you the best choice of routes and times. Bhatti Travel has access to trade fares and can often find options that are not available through online booking sites.
