PIA - Pakistan International Airlines

PIA is the only airline currently offering direct flights between Manchester and Pakistan, with their Manchester to Islamabad service relaunching in October 2025 on the Boeing 777-ER. They also operate from London Heathrow.

For tickets purchased in the UK (originating from London, Manchester or Birmingham), the checked baggage allowance in Economy class is 40kg per adult and child passenger. This must be split across two bags, with no single bag exceeding 32kg. A common approach is two bags of 20kg each, or one at 30kg and one at 10kg.

Executive Economy passengers get 50kg checked baggage on the same terms. Infants are allowed 10kg in one piece only, in both Economy and Executive Economy.

Hand carry is 7kg in one bag only for all travel classes, regardless of direction. You may also carry a laptop, tablet or camera alongside your hand carry allowance.

An important detail: tickets purchased in Pakistan for the return journey typically carry a lower checked allowance of 30kg. This is one of the most common sources of confusion and unexpected charges on the return flight. If you know you will be bringing items back, factor this into your planning or pre-purchase extra baggage.

PIA offers advance-purchase additional baggage at discounted rates through their website, booking offices and sales agents. The minimum purchase is 5kg. Buying extra baggage in advance is always cheaper than paying at the airport.

Emirates

Emirates operates from several UK airports to Pakistan via their Dubai hub, with connections to Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi. The baggage allowance depends on your fare type and cabin class.

Economy class passengers on most standard fares receive either 25kg or 30kg checked baggage. The Flex and Flex Plus fare types offer 30kg or 35kg respectively. Business class passengers receive 40kg. These are weight-based allowances, not piece-based.

Pre-purchase extra baggage whenever possible. Every airline charges significantly less for advance-purchased baggage than for excess bags weighed at the check-in desk. The difference can be substantial.

Consider your return journey. If you are buying gifts or shopping in Pakistan, remember that your return baggage allowance may be lower (particularly on PIA, where UK-origin tickets carry 40kg but Pakistan-origin tickets carry 30kg). Plan ahead and pre-purchase extra if needed.
